about

The earliest version of this song dates back to sometime in the middle of the 19th century, some claim as early as about 1830.
The song tells the story of the notorious highwayman William Brennan (also known as John) who was hanged for his exploits in Cahir Co. Tipperary earlier that century (somewhere between 1804-1812 perhaps).

As a young lad, I remember hearing this great song being sung by the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem. It was always an energetic & raucous song.

But, I myself didn't start singing it until after I had heard my good friend Shane Walsh singing it at a session.
Shane is a member of the Wexford group 'Na Buachailli' and one night after hearing them play it I thought to myself..."you should really be singing that song"...

So now I do.

I hope you enjoy it.
